A little on the history…….
The founder, Dr Usui was a member of a Buddhist group which was based at the foot of Mount Kurama Yama near Kyoto in Japan. He studied and conducted extensive research into healing arts in libraries and monasteries of Kyoto. He learned many techniques and in time he became a knowledgeable and respected teacher. He taught numerous ways to heal the illnesses that were prevalent in Japan. He regularly meditated and went on retreats for solitude and spiritual advancement.
On one occasion Dr Usui spent three weeks fasting and meditating on Mount Kurama. He collected twenty one stones to act as his calendar and threw one away as each day dawned. Nothing out of the ordinary dawned until the 21st day he received his enlightenment.
He noticed a flicker of light appear in the darkness which moved very quickly towards him. This light struck him in the middle of his forehead (his third eye) and he fell straight into a trance he saw symbols and became aware of information being imparted to him as each one came into view.
He knew he had been given a powerful insight into a powerful healing method. He made his way down the mountain feeling energised and elated, and later developed the system of healing that we know today as Reiki.
